A new level of comfort in my life
Yesterday I managed to get to a new level of comfort in my life. Since yesterday I have a cleaning lady who comes once a week and cleans the whole house. And when I say clean, I mean that everything is shining. In Singapore is fairly common to have a maid or a cleaning lady, however until now I was very reticent to the idea, because I was not feeling comfortable to have somebody to clean after me and I pay her. Sounded way too posh and “feudal”.
But now got quite busy with all sorts of things (like diving on the weekends, haha) and lazy as well (I think the laziness was the strongest argument) and just said yes. And now I have a shiny house without much effort and while she was cleaning the house, I could work and do my own stuff. That’s what I like in Singapore, you can really forget all the struggles and problems of the daily life and focus on the important things for you.
When I think of maids and cleaning ladies, I always think of those stories when the house owners have affairs with the maids and servants. So I was looking forward to meet the lady coming to us, hoping to be a hottie, haha :):):) But as expected she was just a simple Filipina foreign worker in her 30s, so the clichés with the maids won’t become true in my case fortunately, haha :):):)
I was thinking and looking back of how my levels of comforts have changed over the past years since I left my hometown back in 1999. In my first year of university I was staying in a hostel with hundreds of guys in the same room, washing my own clothes with my own hands and preparing my own food. After that my level of comfort jumped when I moved into a flat with just 4 guys, but still sharing the room with another fellow. And then it remained like that for a while, sharing rooms, washing my clothes with my hands and cooking and preparing my own food.
Another breakthrough came when I moved to Netherlands, having my own room, having washing machine, and eating in town. Moving to Singapore was the cherry on the cake, living in posh houses with swimming pool or sea view and now having a cleaning lady. :):):)
I consider myself fairly lucky if I look back and see where I started, and where my old colleagues are now. Hope that I won’t go crazy and will be able to appreciate these things. I hope that I won’t take it for granted in the future and will know what life means in less comfort as well.

It’s definitely the opposite when you are going to the West. The cost of labor for simple things such as cleaning lady, plumber or driver is so high and in most cases are only for a privileged few. Enjoy the comfort, but also be nice to them… you never know what they can do if you start maltreating them. hehehe

The problem with comfort is that u become addict with it in time. Or you can get so sick and bored with it, and decide to drop it urself.
Remember when i was living in the student dorm? I had a cleaning&cooking lady home, and i could have easily afforded a rent. But i really wanted to be "on my own feet" :)
Just beware not to turn into one of those stiff guys...
